9th Circ. Shields Calif. Grant Funds In ‘Sanctuary’ Fight
Law360 (July 13, 2020, 4:43 PM EDT) — The Ninth Circuit on Monday barred the Trump administration from requiring California to cooperate with federal immigration authorities to receive federal grant funds, upholding but narrowing an earlier court order blocking the conditions nationwide.
Referencing its earlier ruling barring the administration from imposing the conditions on Los Angeles, the panel struck down the U.S. Department of Justice’s requirements that jurisdictions requesting the public safety funds give immigration authorities access to jails and advanced notices of immigrants’ release dates.
