Cities, States Ask To Defend Counting Immigrants In Census

Law360 (August 12, 2019, 6:25 PM EDT) — A coalition of states and local governments headed by the New York Attorney General’s Office asked an Alabama federal court on Monday to let them defend the U.S. Department of Commerce’s practice of including unauthorized immigrants in the decennial census count.

The governments urged U.S. District Judge R. David Proctor to allow them to join the litigation on behalf of the federal government, after the state of Alabama sued the federal government arguing that foreign citizens without legal status should not be included in the 2020 census.
